The Reverend Doctor James Henry Alexander is a native of Succasunna, NJ. The 2nd of 3 sons born to Deacon Jesse and Deaconess Belinda Alexander, Pastor Alexander matriculated to Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Management in 2004. While at Morehouse, he participated as a student-athlete, lettering 3 years in Track and Field as a Thrower. Pastor Alexander continued his academic pursuits at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Decatur, GA, where he earned a Master of Divinity with a concentration in Theology and Ethics and a certificate in Baptist Studies in 2010. While at Emory, he served as the president of the Candler Baptist Community, a member of the Black Student Caucus and Candler Coordinating Council, and in 2009, was awarded the Charles Owen Smith, Jr. Award for exceptional promise of service in ministry in the Baptist tradition. Following graduation, he served two years as a Teaching Associate / Adjunct Instructor at Emory under the supervision of Dr(s) Noel L. Erskine and Bernard Lafayette. In 2021, Pastor Alexander successfully defended his dissertation, "Beginning a Good Work: Embracing the Model of Nehemiah for Pastoral Transitions," earning a Doctor of Ministry from Drew University in Madison, NJ, with a concentration in Pastoral Identity and Prophetic Fire in a Fluid Context.

A public theologian, historian, and modern-day griot, Pastor Alexander believes in the interplay between the societal, scholarly, and spiritual. To that end, he has been published in The African American Pulpit publication, a contributor to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church accompaniment to the Revised Common Lectionary, a chaplain at the now-closed Metro State Women’s Correctional Facility and in the New Baptist Covenant as a Robert F. Stephenson and Voice of a New Generation scholar. He touts numerous keynote speaking engagements and, in 2023, launched James H. Alexander Ministries to facilitate ministry consulting and mentorship endeavors. However, he counts time well spent mentoring and advocating for young people.

Pastor Alexander's ministerial journey is marked by partnerships between church and community. He was licensed and ordained at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA,  under the pastorate of the late Dr. Orlando K. Winters, Sr., and has pastored in Greenville, NC, and Newnan, GA, before returning to Atlanta in April of 2024 to serve as the 9th Pastor of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church. His emphasis on reframing community involves evolving Mount Calvary from “a teaching church” to “a reaching church” that serves as an intentional partner with the community. To date, under his leadership, Mount Calvary has reintroduced several ministries, established “Hope Hour” and “Midweek Manna" Bible Studies, and has experienced membership growth.

Pastor Alexander is active in Atlanta Missionary Baptist Association, New Era Baptist State Convention, American Baptist Churches of the South and Progressive National Baptist Convention. He is married to his best friend and partner, Reverend Amanda A. Alexander, and they are parents to one curious, active toddler, Lucas James Alexander.
